A systemic inflammatory response to infection, with fever or hypothermia; tachycardia, tachypnea, and inadequate blood flow to internal organs. Complications include shock, organ failure (adult respiratory distress syndrome and acute renal failure), disseminated intravascular coagulation, altered mental status, jaundice, and multiple organ system failure. The mortality rate is about 50%.
