Any process that causes a decrease in the body's pH, as a result of retention of acids or loss of bicarbonate buffers. Causes include excessive intake of acids, salicylates, methanol or ethylene glycol; renal disease or failure; severe dehydration; diarrhea; rhabdomyolysis; seizures; and shock.
