What is the purpose of hypertonic IV solutions?

Hyper = excessive. IV fluid used to relieve intracellular pressure, causing fluid to quickly shift from intracellular to extracellular, causing cells to shrink. Used very cautiously, usually in the ICU, because it can lead to rapid fluid overload and pulmonary edema.
