The second stage begins when the mother is fully dilated and effaced. It ends with the birth of the baby. The first stage is from the onset of labor to full dilation and effacement of the cervix. The third stage is expulsion of the placenta. The fourth stage are the uterine contractions that control bleeding and reduce the size of the uterine muscle.
