Enteric precautions

Learn about the definition for this nursing term.

Enteric precautions are general contact precautions (gloves and gown). Handwashing with soap and water must be performed; an alcohol-based hand rub is not sufficient. Equipment, such as stethoscopes, should be wiped down when leaving patient rooms in all contact precautions. It is best practice to disinfect stethoscopes between any patient use. Provide a private or single room with its own handwashing station. Disinfection of surfaces, including toilet handles, sink taps, and door handles is also required.

Each stage is defined by two opposing psychological tendencies – one positive/syntonic, and the other negative/dystonic.

How enteric pathogens enter the body:

  1. through the mouth, usually via contaminated food and water
  2. by contact with animals or their environments
  3. by contact with the feces of an infected person

Examples of infections that require enteric precautions include C. difficile, rotavirus, norovirus, or any undiagnosed gastrointestinal infection.
